Selective or “Picky” Eating
“Picky eating” is a common phase in childhood, often associated with the cognitive phase of development where children are asserting autonomy separate from their caregivers. “Picky eaters” maintain appropriate growth patterns despite their preferences. Our feeding therapists are trained to identify selective eating and support individuals with expanding their repertoire through responsive, play-based exploration of food and its different textures, smells, tastes, and sounds. At our clinic, you can expect a warm, compassionate, and pressure-free therapy space that empowers patients to try something new when they’re ready!
Pediatric Feeding Disorder
In contrast to selective eating, Pediatric Feeding Disorder (PFD) is characterized by impaired oral intake not appropriate for the child’s age and associated with medical, nutritional, feeding skill, and/or psychosocial dysfunction. It impacts the child’s overall health and well-being, which is where our therapists come in! Our feeding therapists are highly skilled at working with children who have pediatric feeding disorder from a holistic perspective, addressing all the domains of PFD. We are passionate about empowering our patients to explore new foods and add them to their repertoire through the process of systematic desensitization.

Coordination Training
Swallowing is a complex process that involves the precise coordination of multiple muscles and structures. If there are concerns with the swallowing muscles, coordination training focuses on improving the timing and sequence of muscle movements during swallowing. Techniques such as tongue control exercises and neuromuscular re-education may be used to enhance the coordination of these muscles. Improved coordination can help ensure that food and liquids are directed to the stomach, reducing the risk of aspiration.
Preventing Aspiration and Respiratory Complications
One of our primary goals is to prevent aspiration, a condition where food, liquid, or saliva enters the airway instead of the esophagus. Aspiration can lead to serious respiratory complications, including pneumonia. Through tailored therapy techniques, we can help reduce the risk of aspiration and promote safe swallowing.
Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES)
Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is used to treat oropharyngeal dysphagia (swallowing impairment). Metro Therapy Center’s NMES system is via AmpCare’s effective swallowing protocol; it is FDA approved and scientifically backed. Our trained therapists place electrodes on the specific muscles for swallowing. A device then delivers a small electric current through those electrodes. These electrodes stimulate the muscles and nerves in the throat and face to induce controlled muscle contractions. NMES addresses swallowing difficulties through strengthening, motor relearning, and coordination training, leading to reduced risk for aspiration.
Swallowing Techniques
If there are concerns about swallowing safety, swallowing techniques are a set of strategies and maneuvers that can be used during meals. Our therapists will train you on various techniques tailored to your needs, such as the Effortful Swallow. These techniques can be invaluable tools for managing different food and liquid consistencies, reducing the risk of aspiration, and improving overall mealtime confidence.
Support for Aging Adults
As we age, swallowing difficulties can become more common. Swallowing therapy is a valuable resource for older adults, helping them maintain their independence, stay nourished, and reduce the risk of complications related to dysphagia.
Providing Coping Strategies
Swallowing therapy includes education and training in coping strategies. You’ll learn how to navigate the challenges associated with dysphagia, from safe swallowing techniques to proper posture during meals. We can also discuss the use of adaptive equipment if necessary.
If you or your child is experiencing feeding difficulties, our Feeding Therapy Program can help.
